NBA bans Raptors forward Jontay Porter permanently for gambling

The National Basketball Association (NBA) has issued a lifetime ban to Toronto Raptors forward Jontay Porter for betting on league games and disclosing confidential information to other bettors.

A ban for life is a first for a North American professional sports team. The decision came following DraftKings releasing information on wagering discrepancies pertaining to Porter in two separate instances.

As per the NBA’s findings, Porter passed on information about his health to an NBA wagerer, due to which he wagered the amount of $80,000 and, in turn, came in for $1.1 million. Porter also took the help of an unidentified person’s sportsbook account to lay thirteen bets on NBA games.

Throughout the NBA season, all bets ranged in value from $15 to $22,000. Based on Canadian sports betting news, Porter wagered $54,094 on NBA matches, accumulating a profit of $21,965. Also included was the placement of a parlay wager.

The Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario (AGCO) appreciates the swift action against Porter and believes it will establish a positive precedent. The secret was revealed because of Ontario’s strict gambling laws, but they believe that a governing body should oversee the sports betting products provided in relation to the games in order to ensure better compliance. Insider wagering and match-fixing, in their viewpoint, are the actual killers of the integrity aspects related to the tournaments.

Amidst the league’s investigation, Silver and the NBA will collaborate with federal prosecutors in the United States. An internal division of the commission, the Investigation and Enforcement Bureau of the Ontario Provincial Police, will undertake an independent investigation on behalf of the AGCO.

Porter utilized a VIP account at FanDuel, Colorado, which featured his name, from 2001 to 2003. Through this account, he placed more than one thousand wagers associated with the sportsbook, excluding NBA matches. Through 26 games in the 2023-24 NBA season, he accumulated 4.4 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 2.3 assists. Additional affiliations included the NBA G league and the Raptors 905 as well.
