Canada faces El Salvador to begin the inaugural CONCACAF W Gold Cup

Canadian women will open this year’s CONCACAF W Cup campaign against El Salvador, which recently made a 12-team main field during the inaugural tournament after beating Guatemala 3-1 in the qualifying match. 

The team’s victory on Saturday at Dignity Health Sports Park placed No. 104 El Salvador into Group C, with No. 50 Paraguay, No. 43 Costa Rica, and No. 10 Canada. Brenda Ceren scored three goals for El Salvador against Guatemala, reducing the football team to ten players after a video review changed Savianna Gomez, a Guatemala midfielder,’s yellow card to a red card in the 36th minute.

Based on online gaming news, the Canadian women’s national team will begin play against El Salvador on Thursday, followed by Paraguay and Costa Rica on February 25 and 28, respectively. Huston will serve as the venue for all three contests at the Shell Energy Stadium. In July, Canadian men will also compete in two matches at the Gold Club’s venue.

On February 17 at Carson, No. 51 Haiti was defeated 1–0 by No. 103 Puerto Rico in an earlier qualifying match, and No. 37 Guyana was defeated 1–0 by the 107th-ranked Dominican Republic. Later, the Dominican Republic joined the second-ranked Americans, while No. 35 Mexico and No. 31 Argentina players from Group A and Puerto Rico transferred to Group B alongside No. 55 Panama, No. 11 Brazil, and No. 23 Colombia.

The two teams that achieve the highest scores in third place, runners-up, and division winners will progress to the tournament’s quarterfinals. This will be the inaugural senior level encounter between Canadian women and El Salvador and Paraguay.

Paraguay finished fourth at the 2022 Women’s Copa America, losing 2-0 to Brazil in the semifinals and 2-1 to Argentina in the third-place match. The Canadian women have won all 15 prior encounters with Costa Rica, with a combined goal difference of 48-6.

The Gold Cup will take place in Los Angeles, Carson, San Diego, and Houston until March 10. Groups A and B will compete in Carson and San Diego, respectively. The knockout phase will begin with a quarter-final at BMO Stadium in Los Angeles on March 2 and 3, followed by the final and semifinals at Snapdragon Stadium in San Diego on March 6 and 10, respectively.

The Americans edge Canada 1-0 in the CONCACAF W Championship final in Mexico in 2022. It secured its spot by defeating Jamaica 4-1 in the Olympic qualification playoff last September. 

The four dominant football nations from the Copa America 2022 Women’s Championship are Paraguay, Argentina, Columbia, and Brazil. Panama, Mexico, and Costa Rica advanced to the tournament’s main draw by securing victories in their respective league groups from September to October.
